Extension of the lexical space

Hello,
is it possible to extend the lexical space of simple datatype, without
changing its value space?
This would be useful for defining an additional date format
for xs:date, to allow besides 2002-01-16 
also 20020116.
If not any other ideas are welcome how to achieve this.
