I notice that not only does Pages/Keynote put the light tone on the 
right, but it distributes all the bopomofo evenly over the base 
characters, so that some bopomofo characters appear over base characters 
that they don't belong to.

if i type i 我知 it centers the bopomofo as you'd expect when you select 
the phonetic guide.


Please tell me that this is just a poor implementation! :|
