Hello,

Indeed, the proper way is "Qu'est-ce qu'il se passe" (hyphen between "est"  
and "ce").
If Nick is agreeable to changing, then this part will be grammatically  
correct. If not, then, it isn't a big issue since it's perfectly  
understandable to French readers.
