Greetings, My name is Grant Wood. I am the Sr. Information Technology Strategist for the Clinical Genetics Institute at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah. I was formerly the Director of IT for a 2,800 member IPA in Arizona, and have written articles and presented at conferences on the emerging technologies in healthcare - the future of which will be genetic-based systems. The Clinical Genetics Institute was developed to manage clinically applicable genetic advances, develop new genetic intervention protocols, and learn how to apply genetic information to disease prevention and treatment. The Institute will operate on a system-wide basis, but be based at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. By operating throughout the entire Intermountain Healthcare system, we will be able to integrate with Intermountain Healthcare's best-practice approach, interact with physicians from a variety of clinical backgrounds, and utilize the wealth of information Intermountain Healthcare has accumulated through past research and treatment protocols. Our group is new and small, but with a large task ahead of us - to develop a clinical genomic services program. My job is to provide the information technology strategy. In a nutshell, my mission is to develop a computer-based clinical genomics system. By linking genomic data and family medical history data to the patient electronic medical record, the Clinical Genetics Institute will provide advanced genetic-based diagnostic tools to the clinician, and high-quality, personalized care to the patient. I look forward to learning from the vast knowledge and experience of this group. Grant M.
