Mark, I am not sure what problems you see with all those, to be very honest:-( But you seem to see a problem where I don't... (probably...) But, before you go, I would like to get an XMas present: can you tell me _what_ the exact semantics of @instanceof is in your mind? I am not kidding: I still do not know!
