Dear all, We had a good discussion about target beneficiaries and objectives in yesterday’s business group call. I would like to highlight some important points from steering committee call and PBG call for clarity. Our objective is to come up with a strategy for publishing in W3C for timeframe of 3 to 5 years. The prerequisite of any strategy development is identification of objectives. So, we decided to work on objectives in preparation of our call. It is good to have strategy call next week. At the same time we also need to navigate carefully because this strategy call is of steering committee so it can be perceived as strategy of steering committee and not of the community. We talked about inviting inputs from the community before the call, but it is difficult to achieve it in short time and that too in holidays. So, we settled on the approach to use this strategy meeting as a starting point. We intend to decide the broad direction in this strategy call and then take it to publishing groups for further refinements. In PBG call, Tzviya and Dave talked about broad objectives. It is aligned to our decisions of coming up with broad direction. Luc mentioned that it is difficult to come up with list of target beneficiaries. I understand that it is difficult to precisely identify the target beneficiaries, but it is not so difficult if we identify broad set of groups. We are creating standards for companies in publishing industry. If we do not know who needs this standard and who will use it then we will end up in the same situation as we are today. I think that the steering committee can work on broad direction but the precise objectives need to come from the target beneficiaries. I would like to provide an example for your consideration. It is based on the goals and objectives sent by chairs in PBG agenda. Target beneficiaries: Publishers who have their existing business models built around EPUB 3. Most of them are from IPDF membership. Objectives: - EPUB shall evolve with the business needs of the beneficiaries and the supporting infrastructure of validation tools, guidance documents etc. shall be maintained and updated with the evolution of specifications. - Work towards the vision of making all the EPUB publications born accessible by reinforcing accessibility in EPUB and facilitating the infrastructure of tools and guidance for embedding accessibility in publishing supply chain. With regards Avneesh
