Dear all, I would like to briefly introduce myself. My name is Philipp Cimiano and I lead the Semantic Computing Group at Bielefeld University in Germany. I am interested in the connection between natural language and knowledge representation formalisms, in particular ontologies. In recent years, the focus of my work has been on the lexicon-ontology interface. The concrete outcome of this work have been a number of models that support the specification of the meaning of lexical entries with respect to a given (domain) ontology. I am also concerned with applications of such models for information extraction, natural language generation as well as question answering, also across languages. Given that there has been a substantial investment from the W3C and the community in the specification of formalisms for knowledge representation (OWL, RDF in particular), I think it is about time to define a standard for how information about linguistic realization of concepts etc. can be associated to ontologies. I hope that this community group will contribute to and provide the first steps towards such a standard.
