As Gary Stephenson points out in news article <97c3ug$938$1@bugstomper.ihug.com.au>, the spec say the a standalone document must not have attributes externally declared whose values change as a result of normalization. The description of attribute normalization includes entity expansion, which should not count as a "change" for this purpose. Also I can't see any problem with an attribute containing a tab (etc) that is changed to space, since that happens even for CDATA attributes. The standalone document declaration must have the value "no" if any external markup declarations contain declarations of: ... attributes with tokenized types, where the attribute appears in the document with a value such that normalization will produce a different value from that which would be produced in the absence of the declaration. -- Richard
