you mentioned that in the cases where there are no explicitly
baseline-aligned items, it would make more sense to use the main-axis
baseline of the first item that has a baseline.

This was discussed by the CSS WG back in September 2015, and after
discussion was rejected as noted in the minutes:

   RESOLVED: No change for baselines and flex and grid containers.

You were not explicitly copied on those minutes so may have been
unaware that your comment was addressed. Hence this message - please
reply back to www-style (copied) so we have an archived record of your
acceptance of this resolution (or, of course, your objection if you do
not agree).
