I think that adding any markup between lam and alif should break the
ligature - likewise, I would not expect any optional ligatures to work
if markup is inserted.
In that sense, ligatures bind more tightly than cursive connectedness,
which should survive (although perhaps degraded in the case of what I
called "generalized font and style breaks" other than color and
underlining, etc. where the actual font, weight and size is the same on
both ends.
