I've been using it to minimise the reflow when the downloadable font finally kicks in and it helps to a certain extend, assuming that the em-width of the fall-back font also matches that of the downloadable font. I noticed yesterday that the woff generator @ Font Squirrel now calculates the aspect ratio of the uploaded fonts.
