Here is a complete patch for issue 72[1].
The resolution of the issue was to take the text from Saloni[2] and add
that column and table widths are undefined if extra columns are
rendered. Which gives:
Change in section 17.5.2.1[3] the phrase in the last but one paragraph:
then additional columns must not be rendered.
to
then additional columns may not be rendered. CSS 2.1 does not define
the width of the columns and the table if they *are* rendered.
