Anything served as text/html, though, will auto-close the first anchor when a second begins. And of course, IE doesn't accept application/xhtml+xml, so for IE this suggestion doesn't work, even if you're being completely pragmatic. In which case you may as well just use a transparent image, after all -- the question was how to do it in a good, standard fashion.
