The draft doesn't say so explicitly, and it probably should, but I expect that columns, just like tables, will be subject to the 'direction' and 'writing-mode' properties. ('Writing-mode' is a shorthand for 'direction' plus vertical/horizontal, to be introduced in CSS3.) In other words, columns automatically follow the direction of the text. I think we don't need separate control over the direction of the text and of the columns.
