No proprietary standards

No standards should be based on proprietary technology.  As side from the
simple conflict of interest that arises, it also effectively prevents there
being any legitimate open source implementation.  How are you supposed to
pay a royalty when you're not getting any payment?  This is just completely
unacceptable.
