Specifically, it allows a range or ranges of characters to be
specified, with the following results:

- the font may contain glyphs for some characters in that range
- the glyphs for characters not in that range will not be used (even
if the font has them)

The following is explicitly NOT claimed:
- the font has glyphs for all characters in the range
