In SPAN, DIR is the equivalent of LRE/RLE, bidi embedding. This means a new level of bidi nesting. BDO is the equivalent of LRO/RLO, bidi override, that means ignore the bidi properties of the characters and assume the override. LANG has no effect on bidi.
