I would have expected span, on its own, to have no effect at all on 
rendering by accessibility tools, as it has no inherent effect on the 
document semantics.  I'd only expect it to be used to delimit the scope

Whilst I'm having trouble working out what you are doing, it does appear 
that you are equating accessibility with usability when rendered by 
screen readers.
