RE: Table with a horizontal scroll bar

Table horizontal scrollbars are also easy to miss when the page as a whole doesn’t have a horizontal scrollbar and the table’s horizontal scrollbar is not visible – the user might not know that they can scroll over to more columns.

The big problem with scroll bars is they are not useful for large print. If the data in the cell is text the scroll bar forces horizontal scrolling. Evan worse scroll bars often blow off the screen in large print (or low resolution). Scrolling to get from column to column is ok in tables, but scrolling within columns is not.

The normative text for SC 1.4.10 specifically allows a horizontal scrollbar for two-dimensional content such as “images, maps, diagrams, video, games, presentations, data tables”.

Subject: Table with a horizontal scroll bar

I am reviewing a table design that has multiple columns. In the design a horizontal scroll bar is present at the bottom of the table so the user can get to the rest of the columns. Is this ok to do or will it violate 1.4.10 Reflow – Level AA. I’m not finding a lot of answers googling. Please provide some suggestions on a better approach if the horizontal scroll bar is not acceptable.

Thank you!
