EPCglobal which is the entity that owns and standardized GTINs (all GS-1 
namespaces plus several other supply chain identifiers such as DoD's 
UIDs) has a standard for the representation of these identifiers already
as part of the EPC URN namespace specified here:

Its is a well established and deployed standard within the supply chain 
management world...
