2013-01-20: Blog maintenance

Hi folks!

Just to give a heads up on the blog maintenance, what is done, and what is coming.

File uploads

After spending some time working with DreamObject WordPress plugin, I realized that there is no way (yet) to use WordPress media file uploads directly to Dream Objects.

A temporary solution is to uploads changed files on a regular basis and manually calling in our <img src=“…” /> tags in the blog post.

If we want to have an automated way to call images from the blog, it would require programming and I am wondering if we should spend some time right now.

I suggest we put development of this feature on hold and talk with Dreamhost if they have plans for this extension.

What has been done today:
Upgraded to latest WordPress
Created DreamObject buckets and uploaded wordpress file uploads to new bucket
Adjusted static.webplatform.org VCL config
Uploaded all Fastly VCL config templates to GitHub [0] (including static.vcl)
Modified image tags in posts to use images on static.webplatform.org (there were less than 50 images, done manually)
Created salt states to install python-swiftclient, and modified states on blog nodes to have command-line access to swift client on dream objects

To do:
Create a cron job to sync modified files between WordPress normal uploads
Document/find-a-way for blog authors can use static for file uploads
Test and tweak Apache threads and Varnish caching settings

If you want to help, suggest or have any questions. Do not hesitate to reply :)
