Which is why I included details focusing on the level of monkey patching 
rather than reason on first principles.

When there is monkey patching, especially of the kind "in section 
45.2.4.134 right before substep 14 of step 72 of the algorithm, inject 
the following content..." then the spec becomes quite brittle, and it 
can be rather confusing to implement.
