Rechartering Device APIs & Policy Working Group

Hi,

The Device APIs and Policy Working Group has been chartered in 2009 [1]
to create client-side APIs to interact with device hardware, services
and applications (e.g. camera, addressbook).

As the group's initially allotted time runs out in June this year, we
are discussing a number of changes to our official mission so as to
better reflect the work we have actually been doing as well as to seek
involvement from a larger set of stakeholders, in particular from
potential implementors.

The Chairs and Staff Contacts of the group have proposed a draft charter
as a starting point for these discussions:
http://www.w3.org/2010/11/DeviceAPICharter.html

This proposed charter charter offers the following changes:
* removal of the work on a policy framework — that work item has proved
to be source of confusion about the scope of the group, and has
effectively already been abandoned by the group
* renaming the group to "Device APIs Working Group" (with its short name
remaining DAP)
* a better definition of the constraints on security and privacy the
group is working under
* a tighter scope and definition of APIs

The discussions on this new charter have just started in the group, but
we're hoping to get input and feedback from outside the group early on,
in order to ensure that those interested by the relevant APIs but not
yet in the group feel comfortable in the direction of this new charter.

Please send feedback either directly to the group public mailing list
(public-device-apis@w3.org) or to the Chairs and Staff Contacts
(robin@berjon.com, tlr@w3.org, dom@w3.org, frederick.hirsch@nokia.com).

Thanks,

Dominique Hazael-Massieux, Staff Contact of the Device APIs and Policy
Working Group
