Thanks for mentioning me. The use case was representing long-running animations (à la Flash), without scripting support, and controlling the memory usage. Details [here](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/221352951_Timed-fragmentation_of_SVG_documents_to_control_the_playback_memory_usage). In that context, I think it is still useful.
