True, although the most widely deployed one that I know of (msxml) strips whitespace nodes (if that option is chosen) whether or not the element is declared, so as it stands that option is incompatible with all three of the specification versions that I suggested, including the current status quo in the data model draft. As it says in the status section of the data model spec, the behaviour specified is "incompatible with current common practice". David
