Our ref: qt-2004Feb0111-01 Dimitre, following your pushback on our previous response to this comment, the XSL WG had the issue on its agenda again yesterday, and discussed in thoroughly. Although there is some sympathy with your position on this, the Working Group decided that it was an area where we felt it was important to have consistency over the family of specifications, and given (a) the pressure on timescales, (b) the strongly held views that are known to exist in the XQuery working group, and (c) the fact that all the arguments on both sides have now been fully aired, we did not feel that it would be productive to reopen negotiations on this in joint meetings. I know you will find this unsatisfactory, but I'm sorry, design by committee involves compromises. Michael Kay for the XSL Working Group
