Re: Agenda W3C [PBG] call for TPAC Meetings 10/13 and 10/14

Daihei and I regrouped this evening to try to streamline the agenda and give a bit more time and focus to a smaller set of topics with less overlap.

Our goals are to start some conversations about what the publishing business needs are broadly and to generate ideas and interest for future PBG discussions. We aren’t going to solve anything with two 90 minute conversations. But we are hoping to start to make some connections, bridge some gaps and address some of the questions we’ve heard directly about what people are interested in hearing from the business group.

Daihei can explain in more detail, but the purpose of the WOT discussion is to introduce more publishing people to the possibilities of how our content could be used for these technologies and what business could grow from that and to start to help the WOT co-chairs collect some use cases.

For the reading system discussions, we’d like to connect a few reading system folks with publishing folks to talk more about how features get determined and what content is not yet covered by a good experience so we could stop with the chicken and egg thing that has always plagued us and start more collectively working to figure out what makes sense to tackle next.

For the short topics, it is bringing new info or perspective to people who haven’t been engaged and or haven’t felt heard. We’re hearing that there are lots of folks who don’t entirely get what the EU accessibility work means for them, who don’t know what has been happening with educational publishing but see there are business opportunities there right now for possibly more players, for people who may not be engrained in the ecomic space but interested in understanding more how that is working in relation to the traditional manga/graphic novels and to discuss some things that have recently come up with the Japanese market using FXL for literary content rather and figuring out why.

I have confidence that with the time boxing here, we’re going to walk away with things that need further discussion and followup.

Thanks for generating an agenda. These topics all look very interesting
but it seems unlikely to be able to fit all of them into two hours.

Would you share with the Steering Committee your goals for each of the
topics. Perhaps we can help you focus some of them.

Perhaps the order of the agenda could use some discussion to be sure
that we are doing the best to accommodate the timezones of those who are
most prepared for those topics.

(Personally, I am quite curious about what you think will be covered in
30 minutes on WoT.)
