Dear Katrien,
Glancing over the article I note that you and Jesse seem to have found an
error in our paper (the error is mine and not Federico's, we had gone over
it together with the correct examples)!  I actually meant to cite
http://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/provare/
where I've cited of http://www.treccani.it/vocabolario/riprovare1/.
It is in the former that the citation to the motto of the ADC is made in
reference to Dante which is also cited but not as an attestation of the
word:
2. Con uso assol., fare un tentativo, tentare: *se vuoi*, *prova pure*; *prima
di decidere dovrei provare*. *Provando e riprovando*, motto assunto verso
il 1666 dall’Accademia fiorentina del Cimento, tratto dalla *Divina
Commedia*(*Par*. III, 3, dove però significa «approvando e disapprovando»),
che vuole alludere al carattere fondamentale che per gli scienziati di
quest’accademia doveva avere la ricerca sperimentale.
Looks like I will have to try again myself. Alas, I can't rewrite the
example as the EURALEX proceedings have already been published.
