Spec language housekeeping

Hi, everyone!

A minor detail, but one that I think is necessary for tidying up the spec: could we agree which variety of English we want to use? We currently have a mix of British and U.S. conventions* (see, e.g., “serialization”/“serialisation”). I’m happy to do the job of tidying the spelling up according to our preferred convention, once we agree on one. If nobody has any strong feelings, I’ll just go with my own preference. Please let me know how you feel, so that I can see which way the wind is blowing and whether it’s a mild breeze or a gale!
