I think the InDesign Frame Grid feature has several ideas in it that still have more potential for expansion in the future:


  1.  sizing of the text frame to even embox width and height: For the best balance of the text block area in relation to other things in the layout, a standard width and height related to the text size (actually, 字送り) and leading (行送り) within the frame is in line with traditional convention.
  2.  positioning of the characters in the line to fill the width (which is defined in terms of even unit width), and agreeing with the lines that only contain Japanese (which need no extra spacing to achieve 両端揃え), is also in line with traditional convention.
  3.  When text is of a different size than that of the grid, positioning is still in terms of the grid metrics, such as in the case of 段落行どり.
  4.  The grid dimensions could perhaps be extended beyond the grid, to allow other elements to be positioned in terms of text in the grid (i.e. distances measured in even em or 字送り units).

InDesignのフレームグリッドのようなメカニズムが利用可能な場合には、その属性を参照することになります。（Webでもグリッドが提案されていたと記憶しますが。）グリッドの役割は、与えられた字送り量と行送り量を基に、行長を文字サイズと字送りの整数倍で規定し、指定された全角仮想ボディのどれかの辺を基準とする指定位置（x, y）に正確にグリッド先頭行を配置し、常に指定された均等の行送り量となるように各行の位置を定めることにあると思います。均等に詰めたり空けたりする場合でも、字送り量が変化するだけで、行長は字送り量 x（一行あたりの文字数 – 1）+ 文字サイズで決まります。

行の配置について、グリッドのメカニズムが使えない場合には、そのパラグラフが帰属する要素の文字サイズ又は字送り量の属性を参照することになるのではないでしょうか。また、パラグラフ中に異なる大きさのグリフが混在する場合でも、やはりその要素の属性をそのまま参照するか、それができない場合には、段落先頭のグリフの属性を参照することになるでしょうか。(I believe Nat may have more correct ideas about this point).

回り込みについては、おそらく回り込むべきオブジェクトの寸法自体は文字サイズの整数倍で指定される必然性がないため、欧文が挿入される場合と同じように、そのオブジェクトと文字との境界の行方向の位置は、文字サイズの整数倍によって制約されないと、考えられているのではないかと予想します。これについてもNatが詳しいでしょう。(Nat, if could share any hints you may have with us all, I would be most appreciative.)
