It would be very very very very very very very useful to at least 50% of the people who I've sat and watched try attach a file to an email. A surprising number of people I've encountered don't have a clue about file systems, folders etc. They only know about the desktop. Having to browse for a file is too much of a hassle for some. I'm sure millions of people would rejoice when they discover they can just drag an icon from their desktop directly into a dropbox to attach a file to an e-mail.
