This is becoming an exceedingly long thread and positions haven't moved closer together. I think we can all agree that we don't agree :) Can we at explore having both behaviors? Authors could pick if they want CSS colors to either clip or gamut map, this would affect the whole document. Canvas is a scripted API and can have extra arguments to pick the behavior.
