Symbols and icons aid usability when they follow an established 
convention and are recognizable. If they have to be memorized and make
 no intuitive sense, then they just make the learning curve steeper. 
Think of those apps that use a long toolbar of icons that have no 
obvious meaning. I would be strongly opposed to any of these notations
 for this reason.
