Hi,
My two cents..

May I remind you that Android is based on Linux ☺
Wikipedia:
“Android is a mobile operating system developed by Google, based on a modified version of the Linux kernel and other open source software”

Another important point is that, considering the raise of the rejection, by the public opinion, of the domination of the GAFA, NATU, BATX etc.., the recurrent scandals of massive data theft and today the Cambridge Analytica files , it’d be more rational for an OEM to keep control on the data, so to keep control on software, which means to be ANDROID agnostic.. just because Google core business is to harvest data…
And, concerning the OEMS, my company future program is based on Linux, and, as far as I know, Toyota is going to launch AGL based IVIs…

Toyota already has I believe; 2018 Camry in the US. In addition, other Japanese car makers have followed Toyota's AGL lead and Panasonic, a major Japanese supplier, is providing Linux based head units to numerous car makers, like Mazda and Subaru.

Also, some high profile European car makers that used their connection to Android in marketing have either not deployed Android systems or are struggling to make them meet automotive standards. Google apparently does not have the head count that many OEMs expect to support their suppliers manufacturing and software design work and from what I understand there may be considerably more requirements coming from OEMs than expected.

There is a possibility that Google will be at GENIVI's AMM in Munich and hopefully they'll participate and clarify what they see as the APIs and low level systems that are good integration targets.

That doesn’t mean not to have a look at what Android uses, as OSS, interfaces or IPC.. and to be compatible.
Without being stuck to Google road map..

+1

Because Android is not an open standard..

Jeremiah

Well… I have some thoughts, but I am hoping to discuss if/how Android may change the group’s perspective and if new opportunities for standardization present due to Android. In other words, I would like to have a time boxed open discussion where people like yourself share your thoughts and experience. Because, as you say, it is becoming adopted more and more.

Thoughts?

Hi Paul,

Now recently almost all infotainment or cockpit is based on android. Very rare OEMs are with Linux. Frankly speaking whatever OEMs programs, all are based on android.

Do we have futuristic plan for android IVI with respect to Automotive WG?

Peter,

You can pin that one on me. I am seeing Android (not just Android Auto) pop up in automotive quite a bit and am interested in hearing thoughts and discussing it in relationship to the Automotive WG and experience in general. Make sense?
