This is the XML Core Working Group's formal response to your comment on the CR draft of Namespaces in XML 1.1. If you sent more than one comment, you will receive a reply for each. Your comment is archived at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/xml-names-editor/2002Dec/0030.html Please let us know whether you accept our resolution of our comment, or wish to have an objection formally recorded. If we do not hear from you within 10 days we will assume that you accept our response. Re: Definition of local name We agree that the definition of local name is unclear, and we will change the definitions of local name and namespace name to: [Definition: For a name N in a namespace identified by an IRI I, the namespace name is I. For a name N that is not in a namespace, the namespace name has no value.] [Definition: In either case the local name is N. ] (The change from "is null" to "has no value" is a result of other comments, and brings the spec into line with the infoset terminology.) Note that this is not a definition of a qualified name (i.e. what appears in an XML document), but of an abstract "name in a namespace". The definition of qualified names is in the next paragraph.
