This is the XML Core Working Group's formal response to your comment sent to the Namespaces comment list. We have treated it as a comment on the Namespaces 1.1 draft even though you originally sent it as a comment on the 1.0 errata. Your comment is archived at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/xml-names-editor/2003Mar/0001.html Please let us know whether you accept our resolution of our comment, or wish to have an objection formally recorded. If we do not hear from you within 10 days we will assume that you accept our response. The wording in section 5.2 is poor. Instead of saying "the default namespace can be set to the empty string", it should say something like "the value of the xmlns attribute can be the empty string". The point is that an empty xmlns value is just syntax for removing the default namespace, rather than the empty string being interpreted as a namespace name. We will clarify it in the next draft of Namespaces 1.1.
