Section 3.11.6 says:

   Lexical productions
   ...
   [6]   	whitespace	   ::=   	S

However, the text neither defines "S" nor says that it refers
to the production "S" in the base XML specification.  (The
hypertext link to the base XML specification makes it clear
that that was the intent, but the wording should probably
stand on its own.)
