Hi Ian, WSD wg has evaluated Issue 271 [1] for for Assigning Media Types to Binary Data in XML [2] that you have raised with respect to the utility of contentType attribute. The global contentType attribute is an optional attribute [2]. A particular application may not utilize this information, but its presence makes the content more self-describing, which makes the data more reusable and flexible. For example, this information may be used by tools that are targeted to process specific content and/or provide language databinding if desired. When used in conjunction with the expectedMediaType attribute value that would be defined in the schema of the document, contentType value would be provided by the document to designate the actual value of the media type of the binary data. By defining the two attributes globally in [2], we enable tools to be able to recognize these two attributes, their respective values and their related semantics with each other. Therefore, wg has decided to close Issue 271. Best Regards, --umit [1]http://dev.w3.org/cvsweb/%7Echeckout%7E/2002/ws/desc/issues/wsd-issue s.html#x271 [2]http://www.w3.org/TR/xml-media-types/
