Noah's proposal is a reformulation of MTOM using the XQuery data model accessors. It doesn't seem to address media types at all (or yet?). It would be good if someone can provide some input on the progress in the XMLP WG. Option 2 promotes media types into the type system itself so that assertions can be made at the type validation itself, and specific accessors can be produce into the data model in order to handle the media types.
