A nit perhaps -- I don't understand the use of the phrase "descriptive messages" in the second "main architectural constraint". It's the word "descriptive" that puzzles me. Describing what? Are you saying that one characteristic of SOA's is that at least some of the messages exchanged are involved with describing the interfaces, and that other messages are involved with whatever the interfaces do? If so, I think you should be more specific, but it is by no means clear to me that this is what you mean. Another thought -- and I realize that this may be stepping briskly into a familiar swamp that has no bottom -- but it seems to me that the section on REST, although accurate and semi-useful as it is, would be even more useful if it went a little further. It is awfully brief. As it stands, it probably means something to people who are already hideously familiar with the REST controversies, but I don't think it's real useful to those who are not. One might say, "So what"? For what it is worth, here is part of what I said about REST in an internal document: The REST style, in my view, does not lend itself either to business applications of the RPC style of Web services nor to automating via Web services core business processes that involve complex document exchanges. Both of these business applications benefit from the layers of protocols that go beyond what is allowed in the REST architecture. There may be, however, other business functions for which the REST approach may be more appropriate. In particular, I think that there may be a good case for using the REST style of Web services in circumstances where a simple service is to be provided to a very large and possibly diverse audience who are "on their own" how they use the service. -----Original Message----- From: www-ws-arch-request@w3.org [mailto:www-ws-arch-request@w3.org] On Behalf Of Hugo Haas Sent: Thursday, January 22, 2004 9:12 AM To: Champion, Mike Cc: www-ws-arch@w3.org Subject: Re: Proposed replacement text for Section 1.6 All, I have incorporated a new section 1.6 based on the proposals made in this thread: It is in the HTML revision 1.100 at: http://dev.w3.org/cvsweb/~checkout~/2002/ws/arch/wsa/wd-wsa-arch-review2 .html?rev=1.100&content-type=text/html;%20charset=iso-8859-1#service_ori ented_architecture The latest version is at: http://dev.w3.org/cvsweb/~checkout~/2002/ws/arch/wsa/wd-wsa-arch-review2 .html#service_oriented_architecture Here is the details of my changes from the CVS log: | | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Revision 1.156 / (download) / (as text) - annotate - [select for diffs] , | Thu Jan 22 14:59:25 2004 UTC (8 minutes, 57 seconds ago) by hugo | Changes since 1.155: +40 -25 lines | Diff to previous 1.155 (colored) | | Reorganized section 1.6 | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Revision 1.155 / (download) / (as text) - annotate - [select for diffs] , | Thu Jan 22 13:47:24 2004 UTC (80 minutes, 58 seconds ago) by hugo | Changes since 1.154: +79 -9 lines | Diff to previous 1.154 (colored) | | Inserted new conclusion: | http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-ws-arch/2004Jan/0067.html | with comments from Frank: | http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-ws-arch/2004Jan/0071.html | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Revision 1.154 / (download) / (as text) - annotate - [select for diffs] , | Thu Jan 22 13:03:02 2004 UTC (2 hours, 5 minutes ago) by hugo | Changes since 1.153: +4 -3 lines | Diff to previous 1.153 (colored) | | Specified implementation type system: | http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-ws-arch/2004Jan/0088.html | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Revision 1.153 / (download) / (as text) - annotate - [select for diffs] , | Thu Jan 22 13:01:50 2004 UTC (2 hours, 6 minutes ago) by hugo | Changes since 1.152: +13 -2 lines | Diff to previous 1.152 (colored) | | Added SOA's main architectural constraints from: | http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-ws-arch/2004Jan/0040.html | and the following discussion | | | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Revision 1.152 / (download) / (as text) - annotate - [select for diffs] , | Thu Jan 22 11:34:13 2004 UTC (3 hours, 34 minutes ago) by hugo | Changes since 1.151: +115 -70 lines | Diff to previous 1.151 (colored) | | Added new 1.6 section from Mike: | http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-ws-arch/2004Jan/0035.html | with minor comments: | http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-ws-arch/2004Jan/0110.html | | Work pending: harvest: | http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-ws-arch/2004Jan/thread.html#35 Regards, Hugo -- Hugo Haas - W3C mailto:hugo@w3.org - http://www.w3.org/People/Hugo/
