We're tasked with producing a "reference architecture" for web services. I have a reasonable idea of what one looks like, but I can't think offhand of any good examples that we might want to emulate. One possibility would be the OSI 7-layer networking model ...but, uhh, isn't that considered an essentially academic exercise that didn't really shape actual practice? (This isn't INTENDED to be flame bait, sorry if it is misinformed ...) I'm also familiar with attempts to define a reference architecture for hypermedia systems, but again, didn't the Web make this an essentially academic exercise? It would be nice to have a successful model of a "reference architecture" to use as a template for what we're doing. Any ideas?
