While it may be not be required of a validator to fail on a syntax error in the declaration, I think it would be better for it to do so, if only because such errors are not going to be caught automatically any other way. If finding the DTD requires error-correcting parsing of the declaration, there can be no obligation to continue with the validation process if such errors are not corrected. Jamie
