It seems to me that all in-depth discussions on packaging eventually end up at the point where it's realized that a general solution requires more transparency between the transfer protocol and packaging format than we have between HTTP and MIME multipart, ZIP, etc.. For example, you can't expect intermediaries to cache the individual parts of a package in a 200 response, as awesome as that would be. And unfortunately it's too late to add that in without a major rev of the protocol. Speaking of which ... I haven't looked at HTTP2 from this POV, but perhaps those that care about this might?
