Re: Comment on: Providing and discovering definitions of URIs

First of all, like Dave, I recognise the substantial amount of work that
this document represents. An attempt to solve the ongoing and, as Sandro
rightly says, boring topic is very welcome indeed. Thank you, Jonathan,
for taking it on.

Like Dave, I found the summary table at the end a little surprising in
that it didn't reflect fully the preceding discussion. Maybe the first
thing that needs to be agreed is the list of criteria on which any
solution might be assessed? That alone could take a while of course.
Being objective in any debate like this is hard and I can't really make
any claim to be so.

The last time I got involved with it I came down in favour of a new 2xx
code [1] but that was because it was derived from a suggestion by the
person who was then paying may wages (always a strong incentive to
bias). Actually, I think that solution has some legs but I also find the
rule-based solution attractive. Now why might that be? Ah yes, it uses
things like HTTP Link and URI pattern-based rules. My incentive to bias
there being that I've done a lot of work in this area [2] that I'd like
to see leveraged in some way.

So in order to eliminate my bias, and that of everyone else, we do need
the criteria on which a judgement can be made to be firmly established
and agreed.

Incidentally, Jonathan, you wanted a citation for POWDER's describedby
property. The definition is at http://www.w3.org/TR/powder-dr/#appD.
That points to the relevant Spec's appendix which is where the
definition is formalised. However, it's worth noting that there is an
erratum [3] that concerns text within the body of the document (that
brings the body text into line with the formal definition which is
unchanged).

Phil.
