Another question about this initiative: if an object has been filtered, then that filter can be animated by animating the filter -- something my students find a bit awkward (having to modify the modifier rather than animating a property of the object). Scripts used in <replicate> for example, retrieve the modifier of an object (its pattern, gradient, mask, clipPath, filter, or animate) so that replications can be applied to the attributes of those modifiers from within the context of replication. 

 Will the SMIL animation of filter attributes be intrinsically different if the filter is applied through a style than through the DOM?
