It seems I forgot to announce, that on 10 October 2020, the CSS WG finally
published an updated Candidate Recommendation of the CSS Images Module Level 3:

     https://www.w3.org/TR/css-images-3/

We also published a minor update this week as CRD.

These drafts incorporate all CSSWG resolutions since 2017, including:
   - deferring image() and image-resolution to Level 4
   - adding 'from-image' and 'none' to 'image-orientation',
making those values apply to decorative as well as content imgaes,
     and deprecating all other values
   - adding 'image-rendering'
   - adding transition hints to gradient color stop lists

We also switched the “intrinsic” dimensions (width/height/aspect ratio) of
replaced elements to be called “natural” dimensions to better distinguish them
from “intrinsic sizes” of CSS boxes (see CSS Sizing Level 3 [1]) and align
with the HTML naturalWidth and naturalHeight APIs.

Significant changes since the 2017 CR are listed at:
   https://www.w3.org/TR/2020/CRD-css-images-3-20201217/

We expect to keep this official /TR copy more rigorously up-to-date going
forward thanks to Process 2020. :)

Please review the draft, and send any comments to this mailing list,
<www-style@w3.org>, prefixed with [css-images-3] (as I did on this
message) or (preferably) file them in the GitHub repository at
   https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues

For the CSS WG,
