Because that makes the API near-impossible to use: if you do anything that changes geometry, suddenly the object you're using in your calculations for changing that geometry changes... I personally see no problem with allowing the page to mutate the object returned from getBoundingClientRect, fwiw. It's always a new object, etc. -Boris
