"For example, the Arabic script is shared by Persian and Urdu and 
Cyrillic is used with many languages, not just Russian."

I think this doesn't quite make the point. I would suggest the following 
replacement:
"For example, the Arabic script when used for Persian and Urdu exhibits 
significant and systematic differences in letterforms, as does  Cyrillic 
when used with languages such as Serbian and Russian."
