That's exactly my point. Forums require: a browser. That's it, and everything is in front of you on the screen. The mail list requires: a specifically configured piece of email software and familiarity with how e-mail and the list itself works, and then where to look for types of information in your specific email client. Gmail, for example, isn't cutting it at all. So unfriendly.
