These fonts might appear in different variations, but in my test, Arial is horizontally denser than Helvetica. There is not much difference in x-height though: Arial 0.519, Helvetica 0.523. According to the font survey results at http://www.codestyle.org/css/font-family/sampler-WindowsResultsFull.shtml (which has several obvious and probably some non-obvious sources of errors, but what else is there in this area?)
